@AMDMatt These optional driver updates such as "17.11.1 (Optional)" seen in the updates section in Radeon Settings. Do you know why they get labelled optional? My guess is that it only includes the changes listed on the release notes page or it's because it is non-WHQL.

@AMDMatt I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a vega 64, but i've been reading online and some users are saying there can be a BSOD when paired with older motherboards.

My board is a ASUS p8p67 pro with latest bios and running a 3770k, will this setup be fine for the vega ?

I'm going to sell my 980 to help pay for it but obviously don't want to do that until i get the ok

Am not running a P8 board but I am using a 3770k on a z77 no issue.

Furmark isn't very kind to GPUs. I too used it when I first got my Vega and it throttled big time but this was caused by temperatures and not the PSU. Use Time Spy or other 3DMark for better benchmarking. Also increase your fan RPM as the default setting on turbo will allow the temperatures to hit the maximum target and cause throttling. You'll definitely get better clock speeds than that regardless of your PSU which you should just get away with anyway.

I need a bit of time to play around with settings but it wasn't a thermal throttle - temps were around 71.

Which Furmark test are you running? With the standard settings (1024*768, no AA) the GPU stress test ran with core clocks ranging from 1550-1570MHz on my V64. The 1080 Preset benchmark ran with a core clock around 1300MHz (8750 points, 146FPS). With either of these, my system power draw (measured at the wall) was 540W, similar to what I see with Unigine SP but less than peaks I see with 3DMark TimeSpy. My Vega64 is the reference air edition with a full cover waterblock; I've overclocked it to 1732MHz core & 1170MHz HBM with max (+50%) power limit on. I have a 600W PSU and have an overclocked Ryzen 1700; if your CPU or platform is more power-hungry you may need a bigger PSU.
Ran it on the standard 1080p test but clocks were around 1100-1200. I've not had the time to give it a proper shakedown yet though. Maybe I'm just missing something in the settings, a bit of time to explore the software a bit will help!

Not sure if you've had time to play with setting your own Custom power profile, but I think you'll need to do so to get higher clocks for a given voltage in order to see higher frequencies and stay within the max +50% power limit. I believe selecting the Turbo profile will just push the power limit up, but you can still do much better by manually optimising voltages and clocks. The clocks I see achieved usually vary a little according to application - I see my max clocks in TimeSpy & Civ 6 benchmark, around 20-40MHz less in Superposition 1080p/1440p Extreme and 60-80MHz less in Superposition 4K. The clocks in Furmark are an outlier.

Correct, optional = Beta driver. Basically the same as WHQL but without the MS stamp.

Not aware of any issues.

Thinking about getting a Vega 64, I’d normally go with a custom card but there don’t seem to be any and the liquid cooled one says you need a 1000W PSU! So is the stock Vega 64 the only option really?

Of course it does, have to cover the worst case scenario.

I've never seen a 1800x overclocked as far as it'll go @1.5v and a Vega 64 overclocked as far as it'll go pull over 600W.

When my 1700 is OC @3.87GHz (1.38V), RAM OC @3066MHz and Vega 64 OC to the max under water, (and two 7200rpm HDDs running, along with 7 fans and a pump) it peaks at 571W wall draw (inlet before PSU efficiency losses). If I flash the LC vBIOS I'd expect to be able to draw another 50W on top of that.

@Rezident: Raw wattage is one thing; it's just as important to have a good quality PSU. Some people here have had problems even with 850W Corsair units, but without detailed diagnostics it's difficult to tell if in those cases the root causes are inadequate PSUs (known to happen), faulty cards (known to happen) or something else (known to happen too - e.g. installation error).
