Ok, another update from me. After doing some stress testing on my card it looks like its also faulty. I can replicate every time now by running Cyberpunk with everything on max with RT on my 1440p ultrawide.
Everything starts off fine but after driving around for about 10 mins the temp starts to slowly climb until it eventually caps out at 110c and because of this the GPU clock speed goes from around 2600 down to around 2300.

I thought I was one of the lucky ones but this will need to go back. I guess I hadn't noticed before as I've been on some slightly older games that maybe weren't pushing the card enough.
This is the exact behavior I saw on mine to a tee. It ran at reasonable speeds, but after a few minutes junction hit 110c, then it would scale back to 307w and 2300-2400mhz. It would very shortly kick back up to ~2450, but quickly go back to those reduced speeds.

I also thought I was lucky, but was really only monitoring scores and clocks in 3DMark which doesn't really stress the card like playing a game does. Then even in 3dmark I started seeing 110c and reduced speeds.

Seeing lots of reports of 7900 XTX cards overheating because of a defect. I 'think' mine is ok but would like to ask how I tell for sure?
I have a Saphire reference card that is mounted horizontally(GPU fans pointing at the floor). I have tested in a few games and at 100% GPU load my hotspot temp sits around 84-89. Don't think I've seen it go above 90. This is in GPUZ.
Is this ok? I see people mention delta values, is this more accurate, how to I get this info and what do I look for?
It's fine if not reaching the 110°C then its fine. Btw the most important is the delta between the gpu and the hot spot, difference normally shouldn't be more then 25°C.

Why is it better, and if so, why is the Nitro the more popular choice?
Why is the cooler better? It's bigger in terms of dimensions and therefore about 5% heavier than the Nitro+. The fans can run at a lower dB, its about -2bB less than the Nitro+ with the quiet bios. Will you hear that? I dunno. Compared to the Merc though, the TUF cooler is in a different league.

The TUF PCB has an additional Phase for Memory over the Nitro+, we need to wait to see what peoples average overclocks are to conclude whether it makes a difference or not (maybe 5mhz on the GPU clock).

Why is the Nitro+ more popular? Probably a combination of stock levels, the way the Nitro+ looks, the trust people have in Sapphire and the overall build quality of the Nitro+ card. I have not fondled a Nitro+ but I would suspect it feels like a quality item. The TUF on the other hand is a bit dull.

I can’t find any relevant info about XT version issues. Do people with XT also report high temps or is this issue limited to XTX variant only? I would expect the vapour chamber being same on both models. I had no issues on mine running 20 mins stress test in 3DMark, where GPU load was at 100% all the time. I will do more testing in games.

I’m not too sure about this one to be honest. I found a video of someone who swapped the leads and saw a temperature drop but you can see their GPU clock is lower on the video with lower temps. Unless changing the cable reduces clock speed, which is something I’ve never heard of or witnessed myself.

The mystery continues.

I don't have my XT delivered yet, but from my understanding, the temp issues are limited to specific batches of MBA XTX cards only. XTs seem to be unaffected.

I have seen a few reports of XT cards but it's a minority when compared to the XTX. Partner cards have always been the go-to for cooling and performance.

Yes but for the prices of partner XT cards you could have RX 4080 which makes more sense. I wasn’t willing to pay more than £900 for my XT and I had a good experience with MBA cards from Sapphire.

// edit: sorry I meant for the price of XTX not XT you could have a RTX 4080

You can get a 7900XT Speedster Merc for 939inc vat with free delivery.

The 4080 FE is 1,200 inc.

Does the 4080 provide an extra 260 quids worth of performance? I think in the good old days when frame rates these GPU's are delivering were in the sub 90s then the extra poke would have been worth the extra $$$, the 7900XT is so fast in 1440p, you probably won't see the difference with your eyeballs between it and a 4090 in many games, never mind the 4080.

939inc is not a great price for any GPU but its better than paying 1,200 for a 4080 FE IMHO.

AMD expected to issue a statement. System integrators already returned hundreds of Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA cards

AMD has issued a short statement, finally admitting that there is a problem with reference cooling design:

We are working to determine the cause of the unexpected performance limitation of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. Based on our observations to date we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD’s reference design and is occurring in a limited number of cards sold. We are working to resolve this issue for the affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD support.

Would you guys use a +12VHPWR to 2 x 8 pin or two seperate pci-e cables for your 7900XTX?

PSU Is the MSI MPG 1000W ATX 3.0.

Still trying last minute fixes before I RMA it with crashing in games. Mine only gets around 85c on the junction temp and around 60 on gpu with stock settings.

Any hint of the power limit being altered will send it to 105 - 110c.

Thanks OCUK, my Nitro+ has arrived safely and is about to be installed. I'm not excited at all, honest :P

To get on The Owners List all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your Radeon RX 7900 XT(X).

Nitro's and Devils are selling like crazy! Cracking cards! :)
But they are beast, 24GB with 384-bit memory interface, bandwidth crazy.

Even the XT sales are starting to really ramp up, but again 20GB with 320-Bit memory interface, proper high-end specification.

Once the drivers improve and mature I can see these 7900 series cards been mentally quick.

Anyone gaming at 1080P should forget new stuff totally, just buy an RX 6600 - 6700 XT in the £250-£450 bracket, more than enough for 1080-1440 gaming without spending stupid money.

Those looking at 2K superwide and 4K the new 7900 series are proper fast, with driver updates can see them been top dogs in 4K gaming.
