A great big warm welcome to the team!

If you haven't done so already then why not check out the Folding@Home Setup Guide and the Quickie Guide for more foldy-tastic tips especially for when you're in a rush

Looks like we're taking a big hit from these not so nice SMP WUs, just slipping below 200k PPD has dropped us a couple of places in terms of team production though with some uber-crunchers in the works hopefully we can make that back soon enough :)
If you've not been mentioned either I've made a mistake or your stats haven't changed since last week - give a shout and let us know you're still alive :o

It's great to be back.

Will be swapping out my cache-crippled E2140 for an E6600 next week and going back to linuxSMP, so hopefully I'll be upto ~14k a week til I can get my hands on a Q9450.

Cheers Rich :)

Only had my main rig Folding for a couple of days and then started getting BSODs. Took me a while to suss out what the problem was but running memtest showed this:

Picture%20(Medium).jpg

I think I may have stumbled on the problem :p

I've shuffled RAM about and everything is still working but I decided not to resume Folding on the main rig until the new RAM arrives. It'll be here tomorrow but I probably won't start Folding straight away as I'm doing other stuff on here just now so I'll leave it until I go away on Tuesday. I've ordered a set of this as I've been meaning to stick 4GB on here for a while and the old RAM crapping out gave me the incentive to do it now. This stuff seemed to much of a good deal to pass up the opportunity.

Apart from that, everything else has been running as it should be.

Thanks as always to Rich for the news and a warm Foldy type welcome to the new people :)

Thanks for the news Rich.

All was going fine this week until one of my virtual machines had a fit after picking up a couple of the new a2 core P2619 WUs. I also seem to be missing credit for 2 or 3 P2605 WUs, so I'm probably 6-7k pts down this week

At least it looks like the work borgs have just dumped a couple of WUs, so it seems they are still crunching away in my absence (so far):)

Hey gents, it seems like ages since we've had a proper chat. :p

I just upgraded my MythTV frontend machine from Ubuntu Server 6.06.1 to Mythbuntu 7.10. I went to reinstall FAH on it and realized that finstall was now using the 2nd SMP beta. Nice stuff methinks. Anyway, I told it to ask for big work units. The one it downloaded use a monstrous quantity of RAM. Each of the four processes was camped out in 150+ MiB RAM.

Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but the machine only has 1 GiB RAM; way more than Myth alone needs, but not enough to run Myth, the various servers, and 600+ MiB worth of FAH. It began swapping like mad, totaling about 250 MiB in swap. This is not workable for me since the machine boots from a CompactFlash card and writing that much is going to wear it excessively.

Long story short, if I ask for normal-sized WUs how will that effect my points? Are there normal-sized SMP WUs?

This has hit me too. The Stanford guys updated the server that deals with them, and now all the WUs submitted in the meantime are being credited manually, which means we might get points for them in a year or so :p

Hey BTI - at the moment, turning -advmethods off should keep you away from them. These new WUs have been moved back to advanced testing because they kept killing themselves on systems with low RAM, so at least we can avoid 'em for now! I'm not sure what asking for normal WUs would do.

Good, I'll try that and see how it goes.

Now, what to do with this WU that I already have. Perhaps I'll steal some RAM from another machine until they finish.

EDIT: Forgive my laziness for not researching this myself, but how does the point output from these new big SMP WUs compare with the normal SMP WUs?

The new build is online now and being put through it's paces. Unfortunately I'm just in time for those horrendous work units killing fah on my 512mb VMs. I also dropped a clanger by not including the -smp flag for the first day or so which BTI helped bring to my attention. :p

I've just ordered another 2GB of RAM so hopefully that will give me some space to up the VMs to around 1GB each.

Good work everyone and lets claw back some of that dropped production.

Cheers for the news Rich. :)

Horribly, in my limited experience. I was getting 18-minute frames... they're 1620pts so that's about 1300ppd compared to around 2100 for the normal WUs (half a Q6600 at 3.25).

Well, im back to some folding following around 6 months in hibernation. I will try to keep my PS3 on folding when im finished gaming, and my server will be on 24/7 anyway. Think ill start some part time folding on my main rig too.

Thanks for the news again, Rich! :) Welcome to the new Folders. The Battle Of Cell 6 is over. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. ;)

Next stop: Cell 5 - Snapsh0t, you might want to start packing! :D

Errr.....

There are no carpets in those cells, only cells 1-10 have carpets. If Wozzer vacuums in there your floor covering will be all gone (you don't want it sucking up all the sawdust as it's the closest thing to a bed) :p
