A great big warm welcome to the team!

If you haven't done so already then why not check out the Folding@Home Setup Guide and the Quickie Guide for more foldy-tastic tips especially for when you're in a rush.
Got a Dual/Quad and not scared of getting stuck in to some SMP goodness? Check out SiriusB's excellent SMP Client Setup Guide and see if you have what it takes.

Hope the 8-days isn't too confusing for anyone, 24hr average has been worked out for 8 days rather than 7 as has the change from last week so production is genuinely up from last week. Just a shame that so many teams seem to have got a massive boost, presumably from NVidia GPU folding, and dropped us a few places in production - great news for the project overall though :)

Fold on Team 10!!!

If you've not been mentioned either I've made a mistake or your stats haven't changed since last week - give a shout and let us know you're still alive :o

Thanks for the news rich. Great week for me with the GPU client, bit disappointed I didn't get in the top 10 with that :p

I'm also surprised that we didn't achieve higher, since there have been large gains with the GPU client. Unfortunately that's the problem with low numbers :(

Thanks Rich!

I should have entered for single-machine cruncher :p My second rig dumped one unit this week for 338pts, leaving me with 50,372 points from my main rig. Never thought I'd see that many points from one system in one week, even an 8-day one :D

Sadly it's not gonna continue...

Me said:
Sadly, my dad has figured out that I leave my computer running 24/7 and is going berserk about the electricity bills.

I'm under strict instructions to turn it "not on" at night, and "when I'm not using it" (although I'm sure that's open to interpretation :p) So it looks like I'll be Folding something like 16/7 and dropping to something like 4kppd.

But on the positive side...

500k.jpg

Been folding for three years and got 10% of my total points this week :p

Over and out!

happy with that from a single machine - just about double my best ever week.

Fold on team 10 and welcome to the new members

Cheers for the news. :)

Not a bad week. I thought we'd have a bigger jump in production but maybe we don't have as many GPU folders as I thought. The nVidia client has changed the landscape a lot as people are pulling an extra few thousand ppd from nowhere. We're going to have to get more folding just to stay in the game. :(

Team whoopass are nVidia so we've no chance holding them off. But as for the rest... fold on! :D

Nice work you two - ~50k from one cruncher even cob's deep thought didn't get thoses numbers :D:cool:

Considering yesterday was the second Friday in a row I've not been in the office I'm amazed it's got 17k!

Been a good week of the home rig droped the multi and running at 8*400 (3.2, 1.35v)
and am getting more ppd with less electric and heat that at 9*366 (3.3, 1.375)
Now if only the hybrid DD2/DD3 controler could see fit to run my Geil at correct timeing i'll be sorted :p

Thanks for the news rich.

And a warm welcome to all you new folders - especially them with overly long names.

P.s. and how anoying is the new 'overtype' default

Crap we're being over-run by the green monsters :/

Pretty decent week from myself considering I could count on one hand the number of units dumped by my main rig before Thursday. Now that I'm happy with my new set-up I'll be back on full throttle from now on.

Cheers Rich :) And welcome to the many many new faces.

Quite happy with the almost 20K points i got this week. Have 2 friends on GPU client now, and my own on 2 cores, just sold my GTS so will have to wait for my next GPU to fold on that. Going for top 1000 spot worldwide so this is gonna be fun :D

FYI guys there's a new GPU2 core out (1.06)

I think the client forces core upgrades so just check your logs.

Thanks for the heads up, you do need to stop the GPU client, delete the FahCore_11.exe and restart. I do get a 10% reduction in CPU usage, and about 200 PPD reduction, which does mean I could start another SMP client back up. Make sure you have the beta 8 client as well.

As people have said in the official forums, don't worry about the PPD for the time being, the stability is the main thing :) I did have major slowdown problems previously but now its working pretty well :) I'll try playing a game later (TF2) without switching it off and will let you know how it goes.

which is the best GPUs for folding? the 8800, 9800, 3870 or 4870 (forget about the 280s as they are too expensive)

At the moment, 8800/9800 GT/GTS/GTX are the best ppd folders in what I call the "reasonable" price bracket. I would encourage a watchful waiting approach for now though because at the same pricepoint is the AMD 4850 which is potentially going to be a folding monster (800 processing units vs 120ish in the nvidias) if they can sort the core out, which they are working on. The comparison isn't quite apples to apples but it is certainly worth waiting to see what optimized code on the 4xxx series cards can do.

That's what I'm waiting for anyway.

i would prefere an ati over an nvidia. i have a 1950 pro at the moment so i think i will uprade in october when i get my new house (dont have to worry about cutting down on electricity then)

Currently the AMDs draw a little less power than the nVidias, but on the flip side the AMDs use more CPU cycles, so it's a little swings and roundabouts at the moment. The only way we're going to know is:

1) When AMD release code optimized for the 4xxx series cards.
2) When enough people have tested it in the wild.
3) See how nVidia react.

We might be on the verge of a tit-for-tat between AMD and nVidia, with the pendulum swinging between the two as they each release new cards. So, in that respect, there might be no correct answer - it will just be a case of "buy what's best now". This is in contrast to the CPU side of things, where it's been simple for long time: buy a quad and overclock the nuts off it.

It's certainly interesting. I don't know how many cards they stand to sell off the back of folding@home. It's a cynical point but they must deem it worthy enough to release some staff to work on it. Maybe they have half an eye on Apple's OpenCL API which is going to tap into GPU power to offload tasks traditionally handled by the CPU. I don't know.

Short version: wait for the client to mature a little.

Indeed. Nice to see the potential unlocked though :)

By the way, for those of you that are running SMP and the GPU client at the same time on a quad, the new 1.06 core has significantly reduced the amount of CPU being used. I've not double checked it, but its now using about half of one core rather than a whole core which it was using before.

Consequently you can now run 3 Linux SMP clients and one GPU client with them not interfering with each other.

The result? Only a mere 8600 PPD with a Q6600 and 8800GT - potentially 60k a week :D

For some reason I've been lucky with the CPU usage on the GPU client. Mine constantly uses about 4% of my quad, so about 16% of one core. At points last week I was hitting 9100PPD! As far as the ATis go, I gather that the 4850s aren't really any faster than the 3850s at the moment, which would indicate that lots of those shaders are going unused and we could see some serious points once the client is optimised.

Cheers for the news Rich.

I nearly bought an 8800GT, but as I don't game as much as I used to I decided to go for the HD3850 instead, as it used less power and was a bit cheaper :(
Hopefully the ATI client will improve enough to make it worth swapping a Linux SMP client for.

I'll probably be down on production this week as I'm changing ISP so will be without net access for a few days. If I can be bothered, I might dig out the old 56k modem and use dial-up to upload the odd WU or 2

Just thought I'd drop by and say hello now that my name has appeared in the stats this week :)

SOme of you may already know I run a few machines for BOINC SETI, so I thought the least I could do for FAH is run my home XP4800 and 8800GTX :)

Its not a 24/7 machine, but every little counts right :)
