A great big warm welcome to the team!

If you haven't done so already then why not check out the Folding@Home Setup Guide and the Quickie Guide for more foldy-tastic tips especially for when you're in a rush.
Got a Dual/Quad and not scared of getting stuck in to some SMP goodness? Check out SiriusB's excellent SMP Client Setup Guide and see if you have what it takes.

RIP our cruncher pals lost in piratey battle :(

Fold on Team 10!!!

If you've not been mentioned either I've made a mistake or your stats haven't changed since last week - give a shout and let us know you're still alive :o

You know what, it pains me a little to see a flagging folding effort. :(

Still, over a million points though. We're still brilliant.

Cheers for the news Rich - hope you keep it up even if some of the big hitters/most active members aren't participating at the moment.

It is a shame - still we've been a bit spoilt in that it's been the only project many people think was worthy of their cycles up till now. As a team we ought really to shuffle our machines so they are on the right project to make the most of them, my old X2 for instance can't run the SMP as it's no longer 24/7 - would make a good addition to the Rosetta fleet though I'm sure.

Also as a newcomer to folding it must be very confusing with the number of clients and ways to run them - more than ever we need an up to date sticky with better explanation of what is going on and less about the actual setting up (plenty of good guides out there)

In the grand scheme of things we're still doing great - just a bit of a hiccup :o

RAAR!! Feel my mighty folding powa!!!

On a more serious note, my level of folding is going to drop a bit as well. I really wanted to see what level of folding I could achieve if I really went at it and I think I've shown I can hit up there with th best of them :)

I'll still be folding the best I can, as its a cause which is really close to me, so my numbers will sill be highish. They will just drop a bit from where they are atm.

cheers rich!
slacking a bit this last week what with new smp and my lack of brains/motivation/time/botherness to get it running. who'd have thought - create shortcut, add "-smp"? i'm an idiot lol
back up now though.
Fold on 10!

yeah - agreed a quick run at those pirates has dented my folding this week big style. Hoping to get my water cooled build up and running this weekend so will be back to folding a.s.a.p to give it some good testing.

Another 65k or so to see me through the 1 million mark!!!

I was on holiday and still got 9600 points somehow. Still that is 200,300 down on two weeks ago
:p

Should be 40k+ from me next week. I don't think it's just the Rossetta that is hitting our folding totals. I think it dropped a few weeks ago but the drop was masked by the extra points from the race to 1 million. Ligerzero disappearing is a big loss.

My CPU has been on Rosetta for most of the week - top of the single-cruncher on the GPU alone, so I can't complain so much! :p

On holiday this coming week so will be scoring a fat 0 across all projects, but I have a feeling I'll be back in the Fold before long. I prefer to keep all my eggs in one basket... besides, whilst the pirate pwnage was quite amusing, I'm not getting the same satisfaction out of Rosetta. Seeing my quad running four instances of the same thing when it could be doing some spanky SMP goodness makes me feel a bit unfulfilled - I feel like I'm running the standard client again :p

I agree with Rich about making the most of our hardware, though - my brother's old AthlonXP is useless for F@H but I have the feeling it might be more useful on Rosetta.

Who knows, we might do a better job of fighting a "war" on two fronts better than our elected politicians and their allies. :p:D

Current state of play at the moment:

My main PC, running the GPU client and 1 SMP client appears to have died about 2 days after I left for work - nothing new there then  This means that I just have the two quads running SMP clients at the moment.

Since I'm away at work, I haven't switched over to Rosetta - but I will be when I get back. I will be leaving the main rig on Folding as it has the 8800GTX OC2 and it would be silly not to fold with it. I may try a different motherboard as that piece of crap Asus in there can't OC worth a **** If I can get a decent OC on it, I may be in with a shout in the single crunchers league :D

That's my news for now.

Thanks, as always, to Rich for the news and welcome to the new Folders :)

FOLD ON TEAM 10 :D

I think im gonna have to step away from this folding.
Got quite a large electricity bill . . .
Due to the PS3 and a quad +spare cycles on my WHS all folding. Reckon its 400W/hr ish all-in. So at nearly 10kW/hr / day is roughly £1.05 per day folding. That mounts up over the week. And TBH, Id rather keep the £365 per year . . . .

Its a shame, since somehow im 5th in the crunching list. (Dunno how!)

A shame it's not tax-deductable a a charitable donation, really...

Pretty good week for me all in (what with no-one else at home, its a lot easier to justify the use of electricity!) - me and j4m35-ps3 have been pretty close since we started, but i have finally got the edge! I must admit, i would really like to fold 24/7, but like PhillyDee, im not sure i could justify the electricity expense.

I have been wondering whether F@H is at all power efficient. Obviously it is a great project for a good cause, and generates a lot of banter, but is having (bit of guesswork here), say 200,000 active cpus/gpus at any one time a more power efficient method of computation than a bank of super computers? I know that a supercomputer must use a collosal amount of power (roughly 3/4 orders of magnitude higher than a high spec desktop), and compared to buying a bank of super computers, F@H is obviously significantly less expensive. But when a high output machine must be consuming 300 watts, with a fraction of the number of cores, i wonder if the project is power efficient?

It is a lot more efficient, and it runs on hardware that most people would have no matter what. The true killer in terms of performance for these projects is that fact that people are running the SMP client on overclocked CPUs, thus beating the often lower clocked server cpus. Add the enormous PS3 and GPU performance to that and i'm absolutely convinced that it's more efficient per watt than a lot of other solutions. I do believe Wikipedia has a small description of F@H power performance but that is before GPUs which have changed a lot of things.

For my own folding i'm really satisfied with my output for the last week, my brother and a good friend has been doing GPU folding on the account and i have added CPU folding to my brother's PC too. I have bought a 4870 that frankly sucks in terms of this, only getting 700ppd but it's better than nothing i suppose.

The project is never going to be as power efficient as a built-for-purpose supercomputer, but I only have to walk home from the pub at night and count the number of people who leave their outside light on all night to justify me using < 150w folding box.

OK that's it, my poor old PS3 can't crunch any faster and I have stagnated at about position 126.... (lost a place for the first time today)

So I now have both ATI 4870's crunching and the SMP client burning a hole in the Xeon 3350 on my main rig.

I've also built a dedicted box with a E6600 at stock speeds however I used this as a test bed to get used to how crunching worked on a PC based sytem, trouble is I used a "false" username and now I want to crunch for real and can't work out how to change it lol. Can someone help me get the right name sorted.
the PS3 is still running as well...

Don't think I'll need the heating on this Christmas. :D:D:D:D
